So Irrational Games (formerly 2K) made the smart choice to take Bioshock in a great new direction, which direction you ask? Up. The newest game in the series, Bioshock Infinite, takes place in the fictional city of Colombia, a floating metropolis held up by massive hot-air balloons, that has the potential to be more interesting that Rapture.
The interesting thing about Bioshock Infinite, is that you won't be spending much time alone. While in the first game, the only characters you meet are either on you hit list, or communicating to you via radio, but in the new game, the character Elizabeth accompanies you for the majority of the time. The main character, Booker DeWitt, has been sent to Colombia to find Elizabeth and get her out of the city to New York, how he'll do this is anyones guess considering what's chasing the pair: the Songbird. The Songbird is a giant mechanical bird and has been Elizabeth's protector since she was five, and isn't too happy that you coming in and stealing her.

However it's been stated that the whole game won't be one long escort mission with you having to keep one eye on Elizabeth's health bar at all times, Elizabeth has the ability to create and alter parts of the world that augment your abilities and assist you in battle. How these powers will manifest has yet to be discovered but it's clear that Elizabeth won't be a ball and chain.
There's still a lot of intrigue left around Bioshock Infinite, some of which, but not too much, will hopefully be cleared up at E3; who built Colombia, who is Elizabeth, why are you getting her to New York, why does she have this power, who made the song bird, and so much more. In the end though, all these questions, and more, will be answered by the game itself, which is scheduled to come out sometime 2012.
